Those were the words of Don Norton when I asked him to describe the way he feels now.
“It’s almost like having a second birthday—a second shot at life. I’ve been given a another chance and now I know what really matters most.”
Dave Sanderson said he never doubted that Jesus Christ was with him.
As these 2 survivors from the crash of US Airways flight 1549 shared their experience with a packed house at Southbrook Church, there was not a dry eye in the house. As they described the terrifying events that lead up to the ditching of the plane into the Hudson river one could almost imagine what it would have felt like to face death.
Almost.
Everyone on that flight is forever changed. There has never been a large commercial jet that made a water landing where everyone walked away.
Never.
Yet, not a single life was lost from the crash or the icy waters of the Hudson. God was surely looking out for those 150 passengers and 5 crew members. And today we wrestle along with them to answer the biggest question of them all…
WHY?
When you have an encounter with God of this nature what in the world do you suppose He wants you to do with it?
Take life more seriously?
Stop and smell the roses (as Don said a couple times)?
Spend more time with your family?
Probably all the above, but there’s one thing even greater than these that I know God wants from each of us. God wants us to know Him—not just about Him, but really, really know Him.
And He wants us to live for Him.
God has a purpose for each one of us and I now know at least 155 people who will be giving that purpose a whole lot more serious consideration today than they would have a week ago.
