Souls or Seashells?
There’s lots and lots of them—this generation that came to life between 1946 and 1964. And they will be remembered for going one of 2 directions.
- Retiring from their jobs as early as possible so that they might spend more time at “the shore†collecting sea shells and shark’s teeth.
- Rising up en mass and returning this generation to God and the principles and values upon which it was founded.
While I admit that one seems far more likely than the other at this point, few true movements of God were easily spotted on the horizon. They began, instead in quiet places during intense moments of prayer—sometimes with only one person—never more than a few.
That’s why, call me an optimist, but I’m still cheering for the underdog. I’m still pulling for the 43 and ups! If they will set aside their not so lofty goals of retirement, a gold watch and a vacation home and trade it out for treasures in heaven. Well, watch out!
Here’s some encouragement for you boomers who love Jesus and still want to make a difference.
- Moses was 80 before he lead the Jews out of Egypt.
- Caleb was around 80 before he got the chance to fight for his piece of the promised land.
- Joshua was right there with him in the need to take a daily dose of Geritol.
- Abraham wasn’t even drafted until he was 75 years old!
- Sarah had her first and only child at 99! I don’t care how many days a week you do aerobics, that’s a flat out miracle!
I could go on and on, but here’s my point. There is a process God must take us all through. For lack of a better title I’ll call it the, “God is God and I am not†program. Very few seem to get this through their thick sculls while still in their 20’s. In fact, even a casual trip through the Bible will reveal that most heroes of the faith were boomer age rather than 15.
Oh there were some young ones too, but that was not the norm. It’s just too easy when we’re young to go it without God—to think that we have all the answers, to run rough shod over others, and to struggle to embrace the concept that true leadership is servant leadership.
That takes time.
seasoning,
maturing,
trials, and a whole lot of one on one time with God.
So what am I saying?
Only this, If you are a Boomer, then your time is now! God has been preparing you for such a time as this. Now it’s up to you to get in the game. What’s it going to be? Will you continue to watch the plays from the beach house or get in the game and use that beach house for ministry? Use it as command central for raising up and guiding the young people of today?
Are you going to collect seashells or lost souls?
Yes, you have, perhaps, the greatest potential of any generation that has ever walked the face of the earth, but…
The clock IS ticking and you’re low on time outs.
I’m just saying.
