Every pastor has his top 5 or so questions he gets over and over and over again–questions like:
- How can I know God’s will for my life?
- Can I lose my salvation?
- Can a Christian be possessed by demons?
- Did I commit the unpardonable sin?
- Can you commit suicide and still go to heaven?
Number three was asked of me again the other day so I thought I’d post my answer here.
“No.”
How’s that?
Looking for a little elaboration perhaps?
Can’t blame you–some of you don’t know me form Adam, so here it is. Once you are born again (as Jesus, not Jimmy Carter, puts it) several things happen…
- You are forgiven.
- You are justified before God because of the sacrifice of Christ.
- You are a new creation.
- You are a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Of course there’s more, but it’s that 4th one that’s a deal breaker for demons seeking access.Truth is, there’s no vacancy in the heart of the true believer. The Holy Spirit of God now makes His dwelling within you! Take a look at I Corinthians 6:19,
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own”
Still, some believers don’t feel this is enough. They still seem to think there’s room for two in the incredibly cramped quarters of the human heart. And not just any two–but two polar opposites–two who absolutely do not see eye to eye…on ANYTHING! This isn’t some Felix and Oscar situation where they’re trying to work things out despite vast differences! This isn’t the Odd Couple. It’s God or Satan. And that thrown will never be shared.
Sadly, a believer can be demonically influenced and that’s often enough to ruin the life of a once vibrant and fired up Christian, but posession?
No way.
Can’t happen.
