This year at Thanksgiving we did something a bit different—we morphed ahead to Christmas. Now, don’t go jumping to conclusions! We had already rejoiced in all that we were thankful for and dinner was long eaten and dessert nearly gone before we embarked on “Christmas Talk.” So I don’t think we broke any rules there.
But someone (and I honestly don’t remember who) suggested we go around the table and say our favorite Christmas gift ever, favorite decoration ever, funniest story, favorite Christmas special and favorite Christmas song. That’s quite a mouthful. Now I know why the people in our Southbrook 101 class have to have me repeat the questions so often as we go around the room and get acquainted.
- Your name (nearly everyone gets this right!)
- How’d you hear about Southbrook?
- What did you notice first?
- What do you like best?
- What’s your favorite ice cream?
Of course I know the questions. I’ve been at this for a while now!
So, back to the Christmas questions. Most of the answers were exactly what you’d expect
Favorite Movies:
- It’s a Wonderful Life
- The Grinch
- Miracle on 34th Street
- Charlie Brown Christmas
Favorite Songs:
- Silent Night
- Breath of Heaven (ok, that one was mine)
- Jingle Bells
- Oh Little Town of Bethlehem
It got pretty funny when we talked about the stories and best/worst gifts ever. My worst was the paper runway, plane on a stick deal called, “You Fly It!” I’m still in therapy over that one! I thought I was getting a remote control airplane you fly outside and instead got a plastic plane you land on a paper runway (it traveled on a string about 5 feet) from the coffee table to the rug!
Don’t ask me. I don’t want to talk about it.
But then there was the favorite decoration question. Best one?
Not this elaborate tree already up in our family room:
No, it was the one you saw at the beginning of this post—the “Charlie Brown” Christmas Tree.
You see, I had seen it in my daughter’s room and assumed it was the latest ‘cute little gift’ from Walmart or Target or someplace.
Nope.
It was from deep in our own woods. My daughter, Juliana had watched the “Charlie Brown Christmas Special” and felt very sorry for all the “Charlie Brown” type trees out there that wouldn’t get picked for something so special. Sooooooo, she decided to find one and give it a place of honor at the foot of her bed!
Easily, it’s the best decoration I’ve seen in years!
