This morning I challenged the men of Southbrook to consider something different for their sons this Christmas than the run of the mill stuff that will break or be discarded (whichever comes first) by January. I had them think about how it was that ‘Daniel’ from the Old Testament rose repeatedly to the highest places of leadership and honor when he seemed to have so many strikes against him.
- His home town (Jerusalem) was invaded when he was a young teenager.
- He was ripped away from his parents at that same time and never saw them again. Parents, how would your kids do if all they had to go on was the example you set for them up unto the age of 12 or 13?
- He went hundreds and hundreds of miles away to live in a foreign land where the average person worshiped idols and false gods he’d never even heard of.
- He was immediately pressured to abandon all the principles and worship he’d held so dear.
- He faced 24/7 indoctrination and brain-washing attempts all bent upon turning him into a lean, very mean, Babylonian fighting machine.
- He had to ‘start over’ under 4 separate rulers and 2 entirely different empires and cultures!
There’s more, but I don’t want to depress you! I want to encourage you! If Daniel can rise to become one of the greatest leaders to ever walk planet earth with all those things going against him what could you and I do growing up in the most privileged and free country (for now) on the face of that same planet?
