When it comes to light, most of us are like Gollem.

 

You know what?

I just can’t find much redeeming about this character.

I know Frodo seemed to see something in Him, but, then again, Frodo seemed to get sucked in by just about anything.

He was a bit naïve, even for a hobbit.

But when it comes to tenacity, Gollem is hard to beat.

Separate him from his precious little, well, precious, and he will tear your arm off and beat you to death with the bloody stub just to get it back.

IT’S A STINKIN RING!!

Ok, it could make you invisible, and if I looked like Gollem, I think invisibility would be irresistible to me as well. But here’s my real point. Compared to people, and love, and life, and God and beauty and creation…that ring was a piece of crap.

Question.

Just how much do you suppose people love their crap?“Ok, ok, enough already pastor Rob. I don’t know exactly where you’re headed with this one but I can tell you right here and now, ‘people don’t love crap!’”

Really?

Are you sure about that?

I think they do.

And please don’t confuse like with love here. People don’t just like their crap, they LOVE it. And I can prove it. But first, let me make matters even worse.

People also love vomit more than gourmet food.

Proverbs 26:11, As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

And darkness more than light,

John 3:19, And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

And turmoil and strife more than peace,

And sin more than holiness,

And evil more than good.

Not everybody.

But a lot.

More than you think.

Maybe even you!

Funny thing is, if we ever stopped and took a good long look at most of the crap we worship in this life. We might slowly begin to see it for what it really is.

Of course that’s not all that easy.

Hard to see.

With all that darkness floating around.

So today, why don’t you stop and spend a good 30 minutes in God’s Word.

Another 10 (at least) in prayer.

Then take a quick look at some of the crap in your life.

In the light of Christ, it may never look the same.

Oh, by the way, why the use of the word crap so much?

Guess what “all things” refers to?

Guess what “dung” is?
