Serving in Faith

What’s that all about? I’ve heard of serving in love, serving out of guilt, serving out of obligation, and a few others, but serving in faith? How much faith can it possibly take to step out as a greater or teach the little children or sing on one of the praise teams? Nike seems to have a better motto…Just Do It!

But wait. I’m discovering this week that serving in faith is actually non-negotiable. And since God does most of His growth work on us when we are moving rather than sitting, we had better be moving in the right direction.

You say, How does God grow us while we are moving?

Good question, thanks for asking.

But think for a moment. You already know the answer don’t you? It’s one thing to talk about helping someone and an entirely different thing to actually get off your DUFF and help them (what is a duff anyway?). It’s one thing to give to a need when you’re rolling in the doe, and an entirely different thing altogether to give to a need when you yourself are in need. I’ll be talking about that tonight as I attempt to fire up our core for the awesome things God has for us JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Here are a few others to consider. I remember seeing these in a leadership thinga-ma-jiggi a while back;

1. Believing when I don’t see it.
2. Obeying when I don’t understand it.
3. Giving when I don’t have it.
4. Persisting when I don’t feel like it.
5. Thanking God before I receive it.
6. Trusting if I don’t get it.

Everyone of these verbs is a thousand times more difficult when we don’t see the outcome.

They’re also a thousand times more beneficial to our growth as Christ followers that way.

Faith stretches.

Stretching grows us.

Once stretched you never return to your original puny shape.

God’s doing some s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g at SCC right now.

If you aren’t growing spiritually, I recommend you get on the rack!

You’ll thank me for it later.

Not now…

but later.
