One of my favorite leadership books over the last decade has been, “Good to Great.” In it they talk about goals a lot — but not just any wimpy, easily achievable, baby goals, but rather, goals the author calls BHAG’s which stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goals. He mentioned them in his previous book, Built to Last, so the idea isn’t anything new, but that doesn’t make them any less daunting. These are the kind of goals that involve a lot of risk. They are a bit frightening to go after, but the payoff is usually sweet!
One thing dawned on me today in regards to BHAG’s. They are a form of the biggest goals known to man. But it is the last three words of that sentence that bother me, known to man. I mean, they may be big, even outrageously big, but they are still, known to man.
When it comes to vision and the things God wants us to go after in the Christian journey they don’t even appear on the radar if they are just, BHAG’s. No, if they are anything, known to man than they are just man’s goals. The kind of things God puts in an individual’s heart ought to be called, G.O.D.’s (Gigantic, Omniscient Deals) because they ain’t gonna happen in our own strength. But God wants us to have God sized goals anyway, that way He gets the glory when all is said and done — not man.
It’s true. Check this verse out,
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within
us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Eph. 3:20 (NLT)
We’ve got some GOD sized vision at SCC that has me as excited as my little Norfolk Terrier when someone comes home and greets him. He almost never fails to pee himself. So far I’ve kept that one in check, but the excitement is there nonetheless!
I’ll be sharing these G.O.D.’s (God goals) with you throughout vision month. No matter what you’re thinking, I ‘ll bet it’s bigger!
Are you pumped Brookies?
Try not to pee. 🙂
